14th Anniversary Celebration in Simple Words

14th Anniversary CelebrationSimple and uncomplicated are the two words that best describe He Cares’ Mission 14th anniversary celebration.

Gathered together under the banner of thanksgiving, our the families from nearby Quezon City area communed on an afternoon of music, games and food sharing of packed sandwiches and other goodies. Give away and gifts were partaken, with the Holy Mass as its peak. Blessings, I would say.

However, for a person who has seen the foundation grow, this party is has no particular flair compared to the past affairs. The seeker in me is inquiring why?

Then it hit me.

We have to focus our expenses on the upcoming building of the shelter for them. A house, training center, library, and “hope” for the weary. That will be one phenomenal reason to celebrate God mastery.

In addition, Christmas is near. These children and their families will have more if we will have a less expensive one so we can have a blast when we remember the birthday of the One who made it all happen.

Lilia's New Life
Back to Livelihood Program Updates

Meet Manang Lilia. She first came to He Cares Foundation 8 years ago to attend the prayer meeting.  Kuya Joe Dean found out more about her and soon after,  he offered Manang Lilia’s 2 kids a scholarship with our Balik-Aral Project.  Her two kids, then aged 8 and 10 were enrolled in a nearby public school.

Joe Dean also found out that Manang Lilia had no means of livelihood except the “tong” she got from the daily gambling activity in her house. She did not know how to cook a single recipe but still Joe Dean challenged her to try helping out with the feeding program.  Manang Lilia took on the challenge and since then has never left the kitchen of He Cares.

Manang Lilia couldn’t stop sharing how much her life changed since she joined He Cares. Aside from being a gambler, she also was a heavy smoker. It was not difficult to imagine the kind of life that existed in her household.  She cursed and shouted at her children at the slightest provocation. She did not care at all about going to Mass and receiving the Sacraments.

But Manang Lilia is a changed woman. She now puts God in the center of her life, as well as the life of her family.  Going to Mass is now a priority.  She has learned to treat her children as gifts from God and speaks to them with words of encouragement.

Banner to Bag?

banner to bagWonder what happens to Asian Development Bank's (ADB)workshop banners after each event?  ADB ‘s Events Management Unit has come up with a re-use and recycle project where workshop tarpaulin banners are turned into bags of different sizes….bags you can use at the grocery or for shopping, bags you can bring to the beach or bags you can simply use as everyday carry-on-bags.

But there's more... it's not only an earth  friendly project but also a new advocacy of the bank.  ADB signed a deed of donation with the He Cares Foundation (a foundation for street children who offers livelihood projects to parents of street children to keep them off the streets). The agreement indicates that ADB will donate used workshop tarpaulins to the foundation who in turn will convert these into bags.

The bags have been sold to ADB staff and some have also been sold by the foundation.  All proceeds benefit the on-going livelihood projects for the street children.

To-date, ADB has donated a total of 174 tarpaulin  banners and  this has been converted to 229 recycled bags.

God Answers Our Prayers...He Brought Nelia Back Home
by Brenda Deyto

Nelia, a single parent of 5, had applied and was accepted as OFW to Dubai.  She single-handedly hurdled the hardship of attending seminars and processing the requirements so she could provide for the increasing needs of her family.

She was accepted as domestic helper, however her responsibility of taking care of 3 hyper-active children on top of the household duties and lack of food was too much for her. Her wards’ hyper-activity always ended up with them being hurt and she was blamed for it. She was returned to the agency with a bad record.

Her stay in the agency was more horrible because of the over crowded facilities and the lack of food due to the influx of OFWs taking temporary refuge because of work problems. It was at this point that she experienced so much depression. She communicated her problem to her family and some members of her prayer group at He Cares asking for help and prayers. The long wait was too much for her and she considered taking her life so she could be relieved of her misery.

Volunteer's Weekend
Volunteer's Corner by Jette
volunteers weekend
The offer was too good to pass up  —  an overnight in Punta Fuego Batangas that would be attended by a  group of wonderful and godly people. I was supposed to do  two other important commitments  for that weekend and I hate breaking promises so I prayed long and hard for this one.

In the end, listening to the laughs of a bunch of fascinating  people made me feel  satisfied that I chose  this volunteers’ weekend.

Why do I smile every time I look at the pictures of that place?  Let me count the blessings:

1.      It was free. I asked Daryl, the full -time volunteer worker at He Cares, how much should I give  and he answered, “ Chichirya na kakainin natin ”  ( snacks to share with  )

The air, sea, sun, rain, moon and the house and  food  were all perfect. I got to cherish them all at no cost.

God’s love is free ;we only have to say “ yes” to his offer..

Servant’s note:

Hello donors, supporters, partners and friends of He Cares.

These children are hungry in all things.  Yes, in all aspects of life.

No exaggeration, they are really in need.

They are in need of normal food.  They are in need of parental embrace.  They are in need of parental touch.  Yes, they are in need of parental love.

invitation to buildJesus spoke about children so many times during His earthly ministry.  Children are a gift from God.  They are created in His image and likeness.  They deserve to be cared for, nourished and loved.

I believe that they are not "accident" children.  God has His plan and purpose in their lives.  For me, I can go to heaven because of them.  Seeing them is an opportunity to be more caring and loving.

They are inviting me to see and feel Jesus in a deeper way.  Embracing Jesus, feeding them is feeding Jesus.  Visiting where they are is visiting Jesus.  Washing them is like washing my spirit to be humble and pure.  Building homes for them is like buildign my home in heaven.  That's how I feel when I am ministering to the street children.  They are a blessing to me.

I invite you to feel good and feel Jesus!

Building their future is building ours.  Come and see!
